Ted Mundorff (1910-1969) is nowadays mostly known for his floral images, which clearly have withstood the test of time. Mundorff's connection with Hawaii started when he arrived as a child in Honolulu from Pittsburgh, PA. After his formative years he left the islands. He lived in Northern Indiana and painted the interiors of a number of movie houses, one being in Crawfordsville. He also designed cards for Hallmark in Los Angeles before returning to Hawaii around 1936, leaving his wife and 3 year-old son behind. In Honolulu he started a career as painter, illustrator, and cartoonist. Although soon known as a colorful character who would boast of his many run-ins with the local police. Mundorff also earned respect as an artist whose floral Hawaiiana are today as widely sought after and collected as they were at the time of their creation. Like so many artists of the time Mundorff too employed the then new and revolutionary airbrush technique to achieve the soft blends the medium affords.
