The air brush art of the never fully identified artist Gill reflects a time period of Hawaiiana during which several artists began employing a method of air brushed stenciling. Through layering complex textures were achieved. Unfortunately, as WWII enfolded, artist materials became of lesser quality and consequently few originals have been preserved.
This 'Lei Maker' image by Gill that's pictured here has become synonymous with vintage Hawaiiana. Gill was able to convey a sense of elegance and femininity that is unparalleled to this day, capturing the grace and beauty of the Hawaiian wahine, without ever having set foot in the islands. Remarkable, especially considering that today Gill’s work is regarded the most recognizable of the period.
